Family gaming center to open at Millcreek Mall in 2018
Round One Entertainment will offer bowling, arcade games and food plus facilities for parties.
A family games and entertainment center is coming to the Millcreek Mall.
Round One Entertainment, based in California, will open a $5 million, 50,000-square-foot center in summer 2018, said Mark Kozar, a Pittsburgh attorney representing the company in its request for a liquor license for the location.
The center will be located above Mad Mex restaurant and will offer arcade games, bowling, table tennis, darts, billiards and karaoke. It will also have a children’s games area and a 162-seat cafe that will serve pizza, wings and other foods plus wine and beer.
Millcreek Township supervisors on Tuesday approved the transfer of a liquor license for the establishment. The license was previously held by Erie Ale House for a location at 1033 State St.
Round One Entertainment is expected to employ 55 full- and part-time staff. The company expects to start hiring this coming spring, said Shane Kaji, the company’s vice president of development.
“We’re very excited about this location. We look forward to coming to Erie,” he said.
The center is expected to open in July or August.
Beer and wine will be sold for consumption on premises only. All employees will be taught to recognize fake identifications, visibly intoxicated customers and other aspects of responsible alcohol management through training developed by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, Kozar said. Identifications additionally will be electronically scanned and only customers issued yellow wristbands will be permitted to drink wine or beer.
Round One Entertainment operates 17 similar entertainment centers nationwide, including one near Philadelphia. Alcohol sales at those centers represent less than 10 percent of sales, Kozar said.
The Millcreek Mall location, like others, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. and will have entrances outdoors and inside the mall, Kozar said.
Some games will be located on the ground floor. The majority, including a bowling alley, will be upstairs.
Township supervisors praised mall owners for continuing to add businesses at the mall, including Boscov’s department store, which held its grand opening this past weekend in the former Sears store.
“This will be an excellent addition to that facility,” Supervisor John Morgan said of Round One Entertainment. “We thank them for their investment in Millcreek.”
Round One Entertainment also plans to open a games center in the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor, Ohio, according to the company website.
Round One Entertainment is a subsidiary of a Japanese corporation that operates 113 entertainment centers in Japan and has been in business there since the 1980s. The California-based corporation opened its first United States location in 2010, Kaji said.
