Birmingham, this isn’t your father’s bowling alley
This venue coming to Birmingham’s Five Points South is a featuring a boutique bowling alley and other games as well as a full-service dining and bar experience.
Think Topgolf for bowling.
“With El Barrio and Paramount, we were able to watch the downtown area grow over the past eight years,” said Woolworth manager/operator Ben Smith. “This is happening in Avondale, Lakeview, Parkside and all over the metro area. It is awesome to have the opportunity to open this in the neighborhood that was one of the original entertainment destinations in Birmingham.”
The Woolworth takes its name from the former retailer that operated in the same building at 1006 20th St. South. The building was most recently Bailey Brothers Music. Woolworth is also another name for a 5-10 split in bowling, Smith said.
Instead of traditional bowling, The Woolworth will feature eight lanes of duckpin bowling, which uses smaller balls, smaller pins and has shorter lanes.
“The game play is a lot of fun, and can be played by almost everyone,” Smith.
Other games will include Ping-Pong, foosball, bumper pool, darts and more, he said.
Smith said the venue will also consist of a 50-seat dining room, two interior bars and a rooftop bar. The restaurant will offer “Mediterranean inspired, seasonally driven, southern rooted” cuisine. Going along with the social concept, the eatery will offer shareable small plates, flat breads, pasta and a handful of entrees.
The bar will offer 24 taps of draft beer, draft wine and a fresh take on some classic retro cocktails, he said.
Smith said he expects The Woolworth to open in August. For more information, click here.
